Balloon sinuplasty is a relatively simple procedure that can provide fast and effective relief from issues like chronic sinusitis and sinus infections. If you are going to undergo it, you can be excited about the road ahead! Still, you might be a bit nervous. How can you set yourself up for an easy and successful treatment experience? Here are some simple tips to help you prepare:

Communicate with Your Doctor

If you are nervous about your procedure, do not hesitate to talk to your doctor. You should feel free to ask questions and express your concerns. Being forthright about anything that is weighing on your mind paves the way for honest communication and can help you mentally prepare for the road ahead. (Bonus tip: Write a list of questions and talking points before your appointment so you do not forget anything!)

Follow Pre-Op Instructions

Pre-op instructions can vary depending on which doctor you visit and the details of your treatment plan. Therefore, you should be sure to prioritize the instructions they give you above any tips that you might find online.

With that being said, here is an overview of pre-op instructions that are common with this type of procedure:

  • You may need to temporarily stop taking certain medications and supplements, such as those that thin your blood. (Do not stop taking prescribed medications without your doctor’s permission.)
  • It is best to avoid alcohol and smoking during the weeks leading up to your procedure.
  • Make other arrangements as necessary. For example, you might need to take certain prescriptions or arrange for a ride if you will be sedated during your procedure.

The Day of Your Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon sinuplasty can be performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation. If you will be sedated, you might need to fast during the hours leading up to your appointment. You may also find it beneficial to wear loose, comfortable clothing with long sleeves (it might get chilly in the treatment room). You should arrange your schedule so you will be able to rest for the remainder of the day after your procedure.

Balloon sinuplasty is a relatively simple treatment that is nothing to be afraid of! Talk to your medical team to receive personalized tips on how you can prepare for your procedure.
